As there is a lot of this information all over the web, let me start with a few tips for the guys that may not be so obvious:

Shave properly. The scruffy look is "cool" hanging out on a Saturday night, but not in an interview. If you have facial hair, like a goatee, make sure it's trimmed properly. Also, pay close attention to hair coming from your nose, ears, or growing on the back of your neck (my biggest pet peeve). It's not a good look.

Clothes should fit properly. Suit jackets should not hang off your shoulder. Shirt collars should fit snugly against your neck (you will not sufficate) and shirt sleeves should end at your wrists. Most importantly, the shirt should be professionally pressed! Ties should be no longer than the middle of your belt buckle. Pants should sit on your waist and not your hips. They should not bunch up at your shoes, like your jeans, but neatly touch the heal on the back of your shoes (the tailor may consider this a "medium break"). And last but not least, how about a shoe shine!

Low on funds? There are a ton of used clothing outlets where you can pick up fashionable, top quality brands for pennies on the dollar. I have seen designer dress shirts and suits, that look new, selling for $5 and $50 respectively. Throw in a few extra dollars for dry cleaning and don't tell me you cannot afford to look the part. Quick Tip - drop by the used clothing store located near an upper middle class area to find some amazing deals.

Hope these tips help and always, dress the part!

Use Twitter to get a Job

Twitter has been getting a lot of attention lately as one of the fastest growing social media networks. Millions already log on and "tweet" their experiences and thoughts. Micro-blogging (Tweets are limited to 140 characters) is turning out to be a great way to network within your industry and to learn a lot of insider information from people with your interests.

Lot's of articles on How To Get a Job Using Twitter, but bottom line is - you need to stay current in this rapidly changing job market. Twitter is filled with people with your interests and in your career field, so learn the tools, connect with as many people as you can, and start the learning.

A great place to start is by adding EBL on Twitter. We update daily with links and tips for your job search and professional growth.

Also, for the visual thinkers, some cool Twitter visualizers.

Can you launch an entrepreneurship from your dorm?

Inc. magazine recently published an article about successful young adult entrepreneurs..VERY young. During the breakout session, his peers were blown away by his confidence and the ease at which he presented his strengths and interests. Clearly they were envious.
At the end of the event I brought up some of the best presenters, as judged by their peers, so the entire audience could benefit. This gentleman was a unanimous choice by his group. Much to my surprise, his presentation, specifically crafted for a potential interview, would have never landed him the position.
He was surely eloquent and confident. However, he was all over the place and made it clear that his passions were many. Entrepreneurial spirit is wonderful, but a scary thing for a potential employer. Please don't forget that someone hiring you is looking for a commitment - someone they can hopefully grow with. They are already concerned with the figures that state a typical 20 something will have 5 jobs by the age of thirty. Please don't add to their concerns with your lack of focus.

Staying positive and being PROACTIVE

I was doing a seminar at The New York Public Library yesterday in conjunction with Vault.com and was upset to see how many people are not proactively seeking employment. No matter what you think, people are hiring. Even those firms that are actively laying off people will always make room for the "right" individual. As someone mentioned to me in passing, we just had two rounds of layoffs but I still have the green light to bring in really good candidates.

These companies are not posting jobs on-line or in the paper. Nor are they showing up at career fairs. It's your job to seek them out. Do your research. Decide if your credentials and more importantly, your personality strengths will WOW them. Find the person that can make the hiring decision. Better yet, find the person you will directly report to (may be the same person) and make it loud and clear how they will clearly BENEFIT by hiring you. How they would be CRAZY not to. What's in it for them.

So stop complaining and go find a great opportunity for yourself. Someone is being hired right now......why not you?

"People Skills Beget Success” "

--The Meridian, December 2008

Click the link above to see the full article.

Informational Interviews

Quick Tip...

If you're not sure where to locate the best people to reach out to, a good place to start is industry specific trade magazines. Pay close attention to the, "people on the move" section. You will not only find a great person to contact, but a little background info as well. Most of these publications are on file at the library. People love talking about themselves and sharing information about their job and industry. Take advantage of this to gain valuable insight and build your database. It may not lead to instant gratification, but if you plant enough seeds and water them properly, opportunities will present themselves when you least expect it.

Begin by targeting a specific company you would like to work for and the relevant department. Obtain the contact information of the department head - ie: VP, Marketing. Obtaining their contact info and getting them on the phone or via e-mail is all about being creative. See a future post if needed.

You simply want 15 minutes of their time (which will lead to an hour if you're truly personable and passionate about this field) to gain a better understanding of their job/industry and any advice they may have. Before you meet or speak, do whatever you can to obtain information about them and/or their company to assist with your "small talk".

Your goal - Keep the focus on them. Ask open ended questions to keep them talking. Take lots of notes. Send a hand written thank you. E-mail them asking if they don't mind hanging onto your resume should they know of any career opportunities. Stay in contact.

Articulation

You have a 3.8 GPA. You have tons of extracurricular activities. You are qualified for the position in question. But, you don't get the job.

Do you think the person interviewing you had a very clear picture of what you bring to the table? Maybe you pointed out that you had a good sense of humor, had a great work ethic, or were extremely hungry to learn. Frankly, responses like these are way too vague. They must be expanded upon so the interviewer has a clear picture of what type of asset you will be to the organization. It's not about you!!!!

I want you to write down the 2 things that make you special. These two things should be memorable and give the interviewer a big reason to hire you. What's in it for them?

The 2 examples below should give you an idea of where I am hoping you go with this. Your responses should obviously be tailored to the position at hand.

Examples:

1) "I am very friendly, thus I'm comfortable working with people. It doesn't take me long to warm up and I really believe that more can be accomplished working together. I also have no problem asking for help or giving assistance."

2) "I've really developed some great multi-tasking skills here at school. Thus, juggling a few projects at once and meeting deadlines will not overwhelm me. Frankly, I welcome it. I feel more productive in a faster paced environment."

Any Questions? Most of us wish we got more sleep and had more time to spend with family. Stress related illness is through the roof as is the need for anti depressant and anxiety drugs. The financial markets are crashing. Why bother getting out of bed in the morning?

In times like these, it's critical that you find time to reconnect with yourself and prioritize what's really important to you. You have to find a way to do something you love. You have more options then you think!!!

A friend thought she was "stuck". She was miserable at her job but it paid well. She couldn't afford to take a pay cut nor did she have the savings or risk tolerance to follow her dream of opening a coffee shop. I urged her to find some other way that would allow her to slowly move in this direction, and we did.

She would set out to become an expert in this field. She spoke to dozens of owners, suppliers, and hundreds of customers. The information she compiled was incredible. Albeit, it took almost a year, as she still had a full-time gig.

The results? She opened up a marketing and consulting firm that strictly worked with small businness owners, with an obvious specialty in independently owned coffee houses. After 2 years, her self-employed income has surpassed her salaried income and she now has complete freedom to follow her dream if she chooses.

You're never stuck!

Staying Focused

It's never about how you start, but how you finish. Frankly, I am more concerned with keeping the momentum you've already built - keeping you sharp. Look at the many sports teams that have "coasted" into the playoffs, resting their best players. Some tips:

Write down everything you would like to get done for the week.

Seperate the "must get done" from the "would be nice to get done".

Time-block the "must get done" into your calendar.

Prioritize the "would be nice" in order of importance, and time-block as many as you can.

Be flexible and leave enough free time in your schedule. Things typically take longer than you plan, and unexpected tasks will arise.

Make sure you leave time to think, plan, and review. Yes, this should be time-blocked as well. Many of you simply say, "If you know of anyone who needs my services.....or......It would be greatly appreciated if you would pass my name along to anybody......"

This is no way to make your phone ring. Take the words "Anyone" and "Anybody" out of your vocabulary. It gives your potential referral source way too many people to consider. Mention these two words and what do you think comes to mind? We have become a "skimming" society, as we are constantly bombarded with information. Some good, much useless.

That means your message must be compelling and compact. If you don't catch their attention in the first few sentences, or the first 30 seconds, "bye, bye".

You also have to ask yourself that if "they" (your customer, boss, employee) only read the first few sentences/paragraphs, would that be enough for them to at least walk away with a good understanding of your message?

Bottom Line...Less is more and don't bury the message.

Breathing

How often do you take a full breath in and a full breath out? Never or very rarely? That's a problem.

Close your eyes and take 10 slow deep breaths in (nose) and out (mouth) and I dare you to tell me that you don't feel calmer and more focused. Now try taking 20.

In this crazy world where we rarely "shut off", you must find the time to refocus your energy. At first you may get very anxious and the quiet time may be very unwelcome. But coming from a person who can't sit still and now does this almost every day for 10-15 minutes, you'll be shocked by the fantastic ideas, thoughts, and emotions that emerge from "quiet time".

Bottom Line: This doesn't have to be a painful exercise. The economy is in the crapper. Gas is above $4/gallon. Housing prices are declining. The stock market is tanking. Hillary lost.

Who cares. Many moons ago I remember a Mortgage Consultant who was obsessed with the Bond Market. He was a true expert and a great predictor of where rates were heading. This knowledge was surely a good thing and should have made him a stronger sales person. However, he was also a compulsive worrier and freaked out with every bit of bad "bond market" news. It distracted him from things he needed to continue doing to maintain a solid pipeline of business.

All the while, a young gun in the same office, who knew very little about the bond market, honed his sales skills and worked his ass off making new contacts. Within 6 months, he began to surpass the more experienced Consultant - who had a 5 year head start. This should have never happened.

The Bottom Line...Pay less attention to things that are out of your control and focus on the things that will make you money. There is someone out there, right now, who needs your product or service, no matter what the economy is doing. Go find them!!!

Blogs, Blogs, Blogs

What are you feeding your brain? It's funny how people, including myself, expect instant gratification. What's it going to take for us to realize that there are no real shortcuts to business success? Can you "google it" in a milisecond - sure. Unfortunately, this has spoiled us. I remember when we had to go get the microfilm or microfiche and wait 18 years for it to be brought to the counter, let alone take the time to read it and possbily even copy it from the machine.

But some things simply take time and lots of practice. On-going practice for months or years is required until you "master" certain aspects of your craft. If you're not willing to make this commitment, take my aunt's advice (you'll need it) - "it's just as easy to marry rich as it is to marry poor."

Bottom line...many of us have "natural ability". Taking 2 hour lunches outside? Leaving work early for happy hour?

Now, more then ever, you need to take out those goals for 2008. Revisit and revise them if necessary. Blow them up and put them at your desk or tape them to your medicine cabinet. Shrink them down and carry them in your wallet. Constantly remind yourself why you're doing what you're doing. If this is not enough, then the goals you orginally set were not motivating enough.

How are you rewarding yourself when you reach your goals? How about booking a vacation you really can't afford unless you meet your financial goals. If that's not motivating enough, go teach english in another country. If that's not rewarding enough, seek help or attend an EBL event.

Bottom line...enjoy the beautiful weather, but stay focused!!!

Branding and Presentation Skills Workshop

Winning Techniques to Increase your Bottom Line...

· Are you memorable or generic?
· Do you present the same way all the time?
· What do your clients think about you – perception vs. reality?
· Why is someone choosing to work with you versus your competition?
· Do you have a clear and consistent message, one that your audience

 can relate to?

Join Eric Barron, one of New York’s Premier Coaches & Speakers, for a FREE half-day workshop on Wednesday, June 18th at the infamous Gotham Comedy Club. Do you even remember what it says?

Great sales people pay attention to every detail of their business. You may not think what your vm says will make or break a deal, but it could. It all depends on who's on the other end of the recording. Can you be everything to everyone? Absolutely not. At the very least, you have to stay true to your brand.

For example, I know someone who claims to be a very caring, warm, and charming individual. He prides himself on his "likeability" factor. Yet, he only recently, at my urging, recorded a personal outgoing message. For many, it's habitual. You ramble and overwhelm your customer with reasons/information that you think will satisfy their objection. Not good.

Objections are good as they show interest on the part of the customer. And frankly, they may not even be "real" objections at all, as the customer is simply looking for confirmation of their decision - from you!!!. Take a deep breath, don't let them get you "excited", have some self control and throw it right back at them.....empathize and ask good questions.

"I understand. Can you elaborate why you feel that way?" "What exactly are your concerns about making a commitment to purchase?" "What aspects of the "product or service"do you like?" There are dozens of these questions that should be customized based upon your business.

The longer you keep the dialogue going and let them speak, the closer you will get to sealing the deal. If you're self-employed or compensated mostly on commission, you own your own business - like it or not.

Make sure you have sufficient funds to invest in the most valuable asset you have - YOU. Better clothes, better marketing materials, even an assistant - one that will allow you to utilize your wonderful strengths and not force you to do things you hate doing and frankly, are not good at.

Don't have the funds? Then why did you take this career path to begin with? Beg, borrow and steal to give yourself the needed resources to fulfill your potential. If that scares you a little, too bad. No one said this was going to be easy. Enjoy it and embrace the challange.

Living = taking some risk and believing in your ability.

Best tip I can give you - take UCLA or Louisville in your office pool. "Susan, can you please confirm what you must have in order to move forward with this purchase? Sorry to ask again, but I want to make sure that nothing is missed. Thanks."

You can say this a million different ways depending upon the situation and what you're selling. The bottom line - was the message consistent? I know you've heard this before, and I'm not here to lecture you. But the fact remains, I work with sales people and entrepreneurs everyday, and this is one of the biggest factors in limiting their success.

"What could I have done?" Learn from the past but don't let it be the anchor that "sinks" you. There is still "time" to accomplish things in life. Reflection is good, obsession is not. Learn and move on.

"What should we do?" Look too far forward and you will miss the great things that happen every day. Also, you will spend way too much time in "planning" mode versus "doing" mode. Put a plan together for the future, and then get all of the little things that need to be done today, to make those BIG things happen tomorrow.

Don't let them miss the message

I am sometimes (ok, maybe often) a little louder than the average person. You may be thinking that I shouldn't care, as long as I don't offend anyone and stay true to who I am - and I agree. One problem, my MESSAGE may get lost as some people get distracted by my tone and pace.

Since it is very important to me that people don't miss the message being deliver, I do my best to tell them what to expect, up front, when seeing me for the first time.

You should do the same with your customers. It may not be that you speak loud and fast, but soft and slow, which can be just as irritating for some. The bottom line is that when first impressions are being formed, it is critical that the "right" connection is made. If you have a delivery that you think may "frustrate" or "intimidate" the other individual, just give them a heads up as what to expect so your message is not lost. Or, you always have the option to adapt and adjust to the other person's preferrred style of communication - just don't lose your "it" factor along the way.

You have choices

How you handle each situation. Like most, you are probably preparing a response while that person is still speaking - inevitably missing most of their message. A big NO-NO.

Why do you do this? Who or what is creating the need for such rapid fire banter? You, that's who. You are directly responsible for creating most of this chaos.

Slow down!!! Listen to the other peron closely. Stay present in the conversation so you can figure out what buttons to push in order to move the conversation in a positive direction. A good little tip to find extra seconds to formulate a response is to simply repeat back what the other person just said. For example - "John, I just want to confirm what you just said. You expect to find a 2 bedroom, 2 bath with a minimum of 1100 square feet, in downtown Manhattan for under 1,200,000 in the next 30 days. You also expect to utilize a down payment of approximately 20%. Is that correct?"

Repeat things to ensure that there was no misunderstanding and to give you some extra time to formulate a sound response. Just whatever you do, don't react or should I say....overreact.

Shame on you...but there's hope

Have you already fallen short of accomplishing a specific goal your first week into 2008? Many people possess great talent. Why then do so many fall short of fulfilling their potential?

There are obviously many reasons. One that often falls below the radar is a simple one...."feeling overwhelmed with the task(s) at hand." We have all heard the phrase, "think big". Equally important is learning how to, "think small".

Don't have the time to produce your first newsletter? Yes you do - one piece at a time. Take 20 minutes a day for the next month and you will have met this goal. Don't have time to go to the gym? Who said you need to spend 90 minutes their for it to be worthwhile? 20 minutes of cardio, 10 minutes of push-ups and sit-ups, a quick shower and you're out in 45.

The bottom line....doing something, anything, is better then doing nothing. This is how good habits are created and good habits lead to great success.

Must Do's

Do you make a list of "must do's" to accomplish each day? It can be work related or personal. Most importantly, it should be in line with your goals for the week, month, and year.

In order to get the most out of each day, you should regularly finish more than 80% of your must do's. Why only 80%? Because I understand that sometimes - "shit happens". We are not robots but human beings and are far from perfect. Finish 50% and there's an obvious problem. Finish 100% regularly and there is also a problem - your schedule is not filled with enough essential tasks. People that finish 100% regularly are either the most efficient people in the world or simply not pushing the envelope enough.

Tip...

Make a list of must-do's to complete each day. Keeping it "in your head" does not work.

Estimate an amount of time needed to complete each task. How realistic are you being?

If you can or if you must, "time-block" for each task. People with less self-control or those that are easily distracted should strongly consider utilizing time blocking. Just like it sounds, set an appt with yourself to complete specific tasks.

As you are making your must-do list for the following day, analyze how efficiently you utilize your time and really make an effort to be better tomm than you were today.

Find someone else to help you with this - an "accountability partner" - if necessary. It could be a co-worker, your manager, or even your spouse.

The bottom-line...

Don't disrespect your most valuable asset - TIME.

What's your brand?

Everyone needs one. The focus must always remain on the benefits the customer will receive from this relationship. So before you answer, make sure you have a clear understanding of why they will benefit by working with you (save them time? money? aggravation?) and be prepared to articulate this in a manner they will understand. Remember, people like to receive information differently - verbal vs. written, fast vs. slow, etc. - so be sure to give it to them the way they want to receive it. More about this later.

Happy Tuesday....

Goals for 2008

Now's the time. Goal setting is not hokey and not lame. How else will you accurately measure your success?

Write them down - Professional and Personal

Make them very specific

You can even give yourself a range to lessen the self-imposed "stress". For example - I would be happy to lose 15 lbs, but ecstatic to lose 30.

Attached to each goal should be the necessary steps you must take to achieve it. For example - I will work out 3 days each week for a min of 45 minutes. I will consume no more than (x) calories each day and will never eat dinner past 8pm.

Are they realistic? Is the bar you set too high or too low? A good idea is to share these with someone. Your partner, your friend, your boss....someone to help make you accountable. You don't have to go it alone!

Set milestones throughout the year. Set self-imposed deadlines. Make sure what you do monthly, weekly, and daily are in line with the goals you have outlined.

Make them visible. Tape them (and revise when necessary as, "shit happens" along the way) to your wall at work, or your medicine cabinet.

Most importantly - reward yourself along the way. You deserve it.

Happy Holidays!!!

Rejection

What do you do when your customer says, "no thank you". You simply did not show them why they NEEDED the service or product you offered. Do you have a clearly defined list of all the things that your service or product can do for your client?

For example, a Real Estate Agent approaches a For Sale By Owner (you are probably the 20th call they have received) and offers what? If you're stumbling answering this question, how do you think the owner feels?

Every objection is simply one step closer to a yes. Are you prepared to answer these objections? That's exactly what agents at New York City brokerage The Real Estate Group (TREGNY) did during the launching event of a partnership with Eric Barron Live, a full-service sales coaching and training company. About 50 agents were split into small groups according to their level of experience in the industry and sent on a scavenger hunt designed to promote teamwork and showcase their sales ability. Each task was assigned a point value and had to be documented with Polaroid cameras. The agents, who only had an hour and a half to amass as many points as possible, always had to stick together.

"I learned a lot about teamwork and how to really make it work for you,'
says Michelle Jason, a veteran TREGNY agent. "Not to mention it was the most fun I've ever had at work!"

The Real Estate Group is the first brokerage firm in the city to implement this unconventional program. Unlike generic lectures that typically last no longer than a few sessions, the affiliation spans twelve weeks through February 2008. Monthly meetings focus on optimizing productivity, peer-to-peer coaching, targeting and achieving weekly goals and other business essentials. This reinforcement is designed to acquaint rookie agents with this NYC's residential market and keep veterans motivated into the winter months.

"EBL has customized a plan to make each agent at TREGNY accountable to themselves and the organization. Based directly upon agent and management feedback, EBL is touching on all aspects of the Business Plan - from networking and time management, to sales skills and goal setting. Most importantly, we are making sure the agents have fun during this journey while instituting sufficient consequences and rewards to keep everyone motivated," says Eric Barron, CEO of ericbarronlive.com.

For more information on this story or the partnership, please contact Mr.
Daniel Baum, C.O.O., The Real Estate Group at (212) 475-9000 ext. 202 or dbaum@tregny.com.

Wait...don't send those holiday cards just yet

C'mon, even American Express sends you a Happy Holidays card. Wouldn't it be great if all of our customers walked away from the sale satisfied or better yet, having their expectations exceeded?

I just gave it away. The key to a highly satisfied customer lies within what their initial expectations of the process were. If you walk into a movie expecting 2 thumbs, way up, and you only get 1 - you're dissatisfied. If you walk into a restaurant expecting to have a great steak and you have to send it back to the kitchen twice, your level of dissatisfaction quickly multiplies.

How do you know what your customer's expectations are? ASK THEM. This will also save you a lot of time working with people whose expectations of the process are completely unrealistic. This is not to say to completely give up on them. But if you don't think that a little knowledge and a little salesmanship can bring them back to reality....it's time to move on.

Eric Barron Live Launches

Press Release

It’s a very rare person that can deliver valuable, relevant content in a manner that is fun, challenging and provocative – and most importantly, not hokey!!!
